In 1915 Taylor's Seed Inc. began in Aberdeen as Northern Seed & Nursery Company, founded by John B. Taylor, as a branch of the nursery stock business he owned and operated in Ipswich, SD. The company name was changed to Taylor's Hatchery & Farms in the early 1950's, to reflect the chicken hatchery and egg production as the primary business. Maris Taylor had succeeded his father as the business owner and manager. In the mid-1980's the business was incorporated as Taylor's Seed, Inc. By this time the primary focus of the company was on the sale of Pioneer Brand products, and was now owned and managed by George J. 'Jeff' Taylor.
Taylor's Seed further diversified in the early '90's with the Taylor Agency division which
provides hail and multi-peril crop insurance to area crop producers. The agency has five agents
to serve the northeastern region of South Dakota as well as the southeastern
